BIGHORN SHEEP HUNT

One of the most fascinating and popular type of hunting, yet the most challenging one!

On the territory of the Magadan region three types of bighorn sheep can be found:

-Kolymskiy subspecies (Ovis nivicola ssp), habitat - mountainous areas of the right bank of the Kolyma river;

-Yakut subspecies (Ovis nivicola lydekkeri), habitat - mountainous areass of the north-west of the Magadan region.

Description:

• Duration of the tour is 12 days.
• Ideal number of people in the group: 4-6 hunters plus 4-6 guides.
• After hunters arrive to Magadan, they are taken by helicopter to the place of hunt (base camp).
• We recommend you to inform us in advance on what equipment you are going to bring with you. It is possible to purchase the equipment at our store. We could provide clothes and footwear for you. Just indicate your sizes.
• Skinning and photographing of a trophy will be provided by the guides. We also arrange veterinary documentation for trophy exportation.
• Trophies will be processed according to agreements of the taxidermist with the special requirements of our guests. For example, dorsal bear skinning for preparing a standing trophy.
• Communication by satellite phone with main office in Magadan is carried out everyday.
• During the snow ship hunt, it is possible to go hunting for bear, kariboo, bird hunting for the elusive black-billed capercailzies.
• When the hunt is over, hunters and their trophies are transferred by helicopter to Magadan.

The Hunt

Snow sheep hunt is usually done by walking from the main camp or spike camp depending on the tour conditions. The hunt takes place in a mountainous area (800-2000 meters above the sea level). It is mainly practiced by observing and approaching the feeding spots of snow sheep,using binoculars from the heights. Hunter and a guide usually cover an area not further than 15 km from the main camp, it depends on the hunter's preferences,however.

When an animal is spotted, a guide will advise hunter on the  size of the trophy and  its distance in order to make a successful shot.

Accommodation is  provided in the main camps, temporary tent camps, spike camps  - depending on the game animal location.

DAILY TOUR DESCRIPTION

OPTIMAL TOUR LENGTH - 12 DAYS

Day 1- Day 2

Arrival at the  Magadan airport. Transfer  to the place of hunt by  helicopter Mi-8. It will depend on the tour conditions, however.

Arrival to the base camp.Instructions and discussions of safety rules. Acquaintance with the staff, familiarization with hunting area, hunt specifications. Trial shooting, sighting and testing weapons. Introducing guides, distributing area and hunting routes, first day of hunt. Return to base camp.

Day 3 

Breakfast, distribution of  hunting routes for the day. Lunch will be served in the field. Return to base camp. Dinner. Discussion of hunting results with a guide and a supervisor.

Day 4-10

The following days’ routine is similar to day 3. However, in case of unsuccessful hunt our supervisor can decide to move the base camp to a different area.  At any time, tour program can be adjusted depending on hunters’ preferences. All decisions should be communicated to the Kolyma-Travel  main office in Magadan before the end of the evening.

11 Day.  Breakfast. Preparation for departure. Final preservation of trophies and packing. Helicopter transfer to Magadan. Accommodation in the hotel;

12 Day. Transfer to the airport.Departure to Moscow.
